Circuito Off: Venice International Short Film Festival

While Hollywood crowds the Lido for the Venice International Film Festival, those who want to know what is current in young Italian cinema should hop over to the Island of San Servolo for Circuito Off, the 9th annual Venice International Short Film Festival.

The festival is run by Light Box, a communication and cultural planning company run from the Giudecca.  For the past 9 years the festival has grown in reputation and scope and moved to the island of San Servolo in 2006, providing a picturesue setting for the hip and contemporary crowd to enjoy the festival. Last year’s festival attracted 15,000 visitors, who enjoyed DJ sets and art installations, along with work by international known directors such as Michel Gondry.

This year the festival continues its growth with four separate competitions to showcase both Italian and international talent.  Anton Corbijn, famous for his music videos for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and U2, will be the guest of honor for the inaugural evening, with a retrospective of his work planned for screening. Aside from the films themselves, one should not miss many of the other special events planned, such as the QOOB opening party, Cliciak presentation of film photography, and the Short Film Market, the only market of its type to be dedicated solely to short films and video clips.

When one travels to Venice they often wonder if the city is still thriving and the answer is yes!  One need not look further than events such as these, put together by young Venetians, to see the answer.
