Mario Schifano Retrospective at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna

The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna is currently exhibiting a retrospective of the Italian contemporary artist Mario Schifano until September 28th. Schifano, (1934-1998), emerged onto the contemporary art scene in the 1960s and forever revolutionized Italian art of the 20th century by creating images through his artistic instincts. Over 70 paintings, 50 drawings and photographs, as well as film documenting the artist, will be exhibited chronologically to display the evolution of Schifano’s oeuvre. The retrospect will highlight some of the most important works created by the artist, as well as rare works from private collections. The journey begins with Schifano in the 1960s, a time in which he experimented with monochromes, and concludes with his vibrant and colorful canvases of the 1980s and 1990s. Curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, a highly coveted and respected Italian art critic of contemporary art, the exhibition reveals the personal and emotional side of the artist he often kept hidden from the public.
